๐Ÿ—ณ️ Election of the Vice-President of India

⭐ Who Elects the Vice-President?

  • Elected by an Electoral College consisting of members of both Houses of Parliament (Lok Sabha + Rajya Sabha)

  • The system used:
    ๐Ÿ”ธ Proportional representation
    ๐Ÿ”ธ Single transferable vote
    ๐Ÿ”ธ Secret ballot

  • ★ Unlike the President, state assemblies are not involved in this election.


๐Ÿ“Œ Eligibility Criteria for Vice-President

A person must:

  • ★ Be a citizen of India

  • ★ Be at least 35 years old

  • ★ Be qualified to be elected to the Rajya Sabha

  • Must not hold any office of profit under the Government of India or state/local bodies.

  • If an MP/MLA is elected as Vice-President, their seat becomes automatically vacant.

  • Vice-President is not a member of any legislature while in office.
